Ms. Zulene Mayfield Honored at the Bread and Roses Community Fund’s Tribute to Change

On Thursday, June 26th, 2025, Ms. Zulene Mayfield, chairperson of CRCQL was honored at the Tribute to Change event, hosted by the Bread and Roses Community Fund. This event occurs yearly, and aims to connect grassroots organizations who center social justice, and raise money for the year ahead.

The theme of this year’s Tribute to Change was ‘Turning the Tide: Climate Justice and the Fight for Liberation’, recognizing organizers who’ve made monumental contributions to the fight for climate and environmental justice. Among other honorees who are organizing around food access, housing equity, and clean energy, CRCQL’s fight for clean air in the city of Chester was showcased and Ms. Zulene’s decades of work were honored. Ms. Zulene was awarded the Paul Robeson Lifetime Achievement Award, “given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to social change throughout their lifetime” (Bread and Roses). Through her leadership, CRCQL has defeated several polluting industries, prioritized environmental justice as a constitutional right through a landmark court case, increased education about zero-waste initiatives, solar energy, and the dangers of incineration, and continues to fight against corporations that target the city of Chester.

Members of CRCQL attended alongside Ms. Zulene, and enjoyed an evening of celebration. We were so honored to be part of this moment. But the work continues. We are still fighting against polluters like Reworld (trash incinerator) and Penn America (LNG facility). Join us at our next meeting to learn more!
