Never Vanguard at Covanta Incinerator

This past Saturday, June 10th, a rally was held outside the Covanta incinerator’ employee entrance to protest and inform people about Vanguard’s investment in Covanta and other polluting, destructive industry. Organized by Earth Quaker Action Team (EQAT), supported by CRCQL, this demonstration was part of EQAT’s Never Vanguard campaign – Vanguard being one of Covanta’s principle financiers. The demonstration began with Dr. Nolan L. Fontaine giving a land acknowledgement. Participants joined in song protesting Vanguard and Covanta’s roles in making our air toxic, and speakers gave speeches about the scope and consequences of Vanguard’s investments in the Delaware River valley as well as the consequences of living near polluting industries. Speakers included Chairperson Zulene Mayfield, Chester resident Margaret Johnson, and EQAT’s Eve Gutman.

More on the Never Vanguard campaign:

“Vanguard is the world’s #1 investor in fossil fuels, which are destroying our climate and communities. To get this huge asset manager to change, we’ve written letters, made phone calls, delivered petitions, and asked company leadership to meet with us to hear our concerns. We’ve even gotten arrested at Vanguard headquarters and prayed outside the CEO’s house.”Vanguard is the world’s #1 investor in fossil fuels, which are destroying our climate and communities. To get this huge asset manager to change, we’ve written letters, made phone calls, delivered petitions, and asked company leadership to meet with us to hear our concerns. We’ve even gotten arrested at Vanguard headquarters and prayed outside the CEO’s house.

We can’t continue to put our trust or our savings in a company that is on this reckless course. It’s time to pledge Never Vanguard, together.”
