Opponents of a proposed liquified natural gas facility in Chester aren’t shy about expressing their feelings Tuesday at a state task force hearing at Widener University.

CHESTER — With hundreds standing and wildly applauding and cheering the community pushback, Zulene Mayfield sat before a committee exploring putting a liquified natural gas facility in Chester and told them, “We say no!”
The chairperson of Chester Residents Concerned for Quality Living joined Chester Councilman Stefan Roots in testifying before the Philadelphia LNG Export Task Force on Tuesday to express opposition to a facility in Delaware County.
“There are 35,000 reasons I don’t want a liquefied natural gas export facility operating in Chester,” Roots said to more applause as he spoke about the city residents. “New polluting industries are not welcome in Chester.”
Delaware County Council issued a statement expressing their discontent at not being able to testify and their similar opposition to the project.
The Philadelphia LNG Export Task Force held its third hearing at Lathem Hall on Widener University’s campus. The task force is examining the economic feasibility and impact and security needs in developing an LNG export facility in Pennsylvania and will provide a report to Gov. Josh Shapiro and the General Assembly.
Penn America Energy wants to build an LNG facility for a cost between $4 billion and $8 billion that can process up to 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas daily along the Delaware River. They’re targeting the first quarter of 2028 for the first cargoes to South America, Europe and Asia
