Say no to LNG in Eddystone

For some, this might sound like just another industrial project, but for those of us who live here, building an LNG plant is a direct threat to our health, safety, and future. We must stop the proposed LNG plant that Eddystone Energy LLC (Penn American Energy Holdings LLC) wants to build in Eddystone PA before it changes our community forever. Eddystone is already surrounded by industry that pollutes our environment and affects our quality of life. Adding an LNG plant, which stores and processes highly flammable gas, would dramatically increase the risk of explosions, toxic leaks, and air pollution. LNG is not just another fuel; it is processed natural gas that takes up about 1/600th of the volume of natural gas in its vapor state (Liquefied Natural Gas Overview | PHMSA, n.d.). If released, it can vaporize into a highly combustible cloud. One accident could devastate the Borough I live in!

Studies from communities near LNG plants have shown higher rates of asthma, respiratory illness and cardiovascular problems (Environmental Health Project, 2024). Children and seniors are especially vulnerable. Eddystone already struggles with pollutants due to nearby industrial activity; why would we add another major polluter to the mix? Once the damage is done to our air and water, it’s nearly impossible to reverse.

Supporters of the project claim it will bring jobs and economic growth. But these promises are often overstated. LNG plants typically require specialized workers that have at least 5 years of experience, meaning most of the high-paying jobs won’t go to Eddystone residents (49 CFR Part 193 Subpart H — Personnel Qualifications and Training, n.d.). Meanwhile, the long-term costs, from increased emergency services to environmental cleanup, are left for taxpayers to shoulder.

Some argue that LNG is a “bridge fuel” toward cleaner energy. But bridges are meant to lead somewhere better, not keep us stuck in the same cycle of fossil fuel dependence. Investing in LNG now locks us into decades of continued emissions and delays the transition to truly renewable energy sources (Nelson, 2025).  Solar, wind, and battery storage projects can create Jobs, generate tax revenue, and improve public health without putting our safety at risk.

Eddystone has the potential to be a leader in clean energy innovation. Our location, infrastructure, and workforce could support renewable energy manufacturing, green job training programs, and community-owned solar projects. These alternatives would not only protect our environment but also create sustainable economic opportunities for generations to come.

Once an LNG plant is built, it is nearly impossible to undo the damage. That’s why we must speak out before it’s too late. Attend borough council meetings. Write to your state representative. Join local environmental groups that are organizing the project. Share information with your neighbors so they understand the risks.

Eddystone deserves investment in clean, sustainable industries, not another hazardous facility that benefits corporations more than residents.

If we act now, we can protect our air, our water, and our children’s future. Contact your local council, attend public hearings, and make your voice heard: No LNG plant in Eddystone. Not now. Not ever.
